While Godard was busy congratulating himself on breaking all the rules during the French New Wave, Demy one-upped him by breaking all of Godard’s rules and looped back around, making a meticulous, heartbreaking, utterly gorgeous movie in which every word is sung and every suit and dress and surface is eye-poppingly lush. It kills me every time. Every. Time.
