The political allegory, the hopelessness, and the ending of Planet of the Apes all make perfect sense once you learn that Rod Serling wrote the script. It’s a brilliant 2-hour Twilight Zone episode. It’s a weird, nightmarish spectacle that spawned some truly wild sequels.
