THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT (1967)
Written and Directed by Jacques Demy
Starring Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac, Gene Kelly
KATY SAYS: Jacques Demy serves up a musical bursting with color and charm that makes me more delighted with every viewing. Every scene is bursting with joy and light with a coordinated motorcycle dance in the finale that made me want to invest in a Honda Supersport. Bonus: Gene Kelly dancing in the streets of a French village.
ERIC SAYS: The most joyous of the Demyverse movies (that’s right, I said Demyverse! Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Lola, Bay of Angels, Model Shop, and this one form a loosely connected world). It’s ridiculous and gorgeous and every time I talk about it I just want to go watch it – which is what I’m going to do right now. Bonus: Real sisters playing sisters.
