SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS (1941)
Written and Directed by Preston Sturges
Starring Veronica Lake, Joel McCrea
KATY SAYS: Set against the background of the Great Depression, this comedy hides a study of privilege and class in amongst the jokes. The ending is a bit on the nose but it’s still more then worth a watch.
ERIC SAYS: It’s both a comedy about drama and a drama about comedy. Sturges’ dialogue sings. It says a lot that when the Coens made their screwball comedy, they named it after the movie-in-a-movie from Sullivan’s Travels. Bonus: every second Veronica Lake is on screen.
